LEARNING

Science

At Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School students are encouraged to develop their independence as they explore, participate and engage in the world around them.

Kids are naturally curious about the world around them. Students have many opportunities to pose questions, hypothesize, experiment and record data through hands on activities. Each term there is a focus on one of the four Science strands: Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Earth and Beyond Sciences. The Science content includes the three strands of Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. The three strands of the curriculum are interrelated and their content is taught in an integrated way. Students learn Science as a specialist Learning Area in a purpose-built Science Lab/Room.

LEARNING

Garden Centre

In addition to the learning of knowledge across the four strands, students are able to apply their learning through scientific inquiry and integrate their studies in the School Garden Centre.

Our Garden Centre’s focus is on Sustainability and students learn the values of how to grow their own produce, minimize food waste by worm farming, composting and feeding our chickens. Students also learn the sustainable practice of Aquaponics, which is a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. Students learn with a hands-on approach and take pride and ownership of their garden. Every Lunch is a hive of activity as students from Years 1 to 6 can spend their lunch time in the Garden Centre caring for all the elements of our garden. It is a wonderful experience to watch as students from Years 1 to 6 collaborate and work together to care for their beautiful garden.
